Always better to have had a near miss than nothing...the data from the CDC suggests pregnancy rates in patients undergoing IVF are higher in those with prior pregnancy loss in a previous cycle compared with those that came up totally empty…

Hi Melissa Most commonly biochemical pregnancies are genetic in origin as the embryo was normal enough to implant but not normal enough to keep growing. Any heavy bleeding that is unusual is a reason to at least check in with your doctor... Good…

Agree that the emotional ups and downs make the 2ww the worst part of the whole process for many of our patients. Hard to understand why progesterone would cause cramping as progesterone is actually a uterine relaxant but there are always exceptions…

Bonus baby with NC IVF after being told FSH levels precluded another IVF attempt!

Just received a wonderful email from a lovely couple who traveled all the way from Georgia to do NC IVF here at Dominion. Having had a previous IVF/ICSI baby in 2006 they had returned to their RE for another attempt at IVF. Previously the response to medications had been poor and this time the response was even worse with no retrieval even attempted. Her FSH was 18.9 and they were told that essentially no good options existed in terms of IVF. Fortunately, they had heard about NC IVF and we had…See More

Hi Melissa, Sorry things have not been working out for you. A year of clomid is certainly reason enough to go see a fertility specialist. In general, if IUIs are going to work then success will come within the first 3 cycles. Given the duration of…

IUI vs. IVF...the FASTT trial

Frequently I am asked about IUI compared to IVF and specifically about NC IVF compared with IUI. Although IUI can be successful, there are clear limitations to an IUI. First of all, unless pregnancy occurs an IUI does little to explain why a couple has failed to conceive. Could the tube have failed to catch an egg(s)? Could the sperm have failed to find an egg(s)? Could the sperm have failed to fertilize an egg(s)? Could the fertilized egg(s) have failed to grow? Could the embryo(s) have failed…See More

Unfortunately sperm that comes from upstream and not from the ejaculate cannot fertilize an egg without resorting to IVF and ICSI because the final stage in sperm activation would not have occurred. So good idea but wont work. We do a huge number of…

Long Distance NC-IVF

Sometimes it pays to travel. In June I had 2 international patients who came to Dominion Fertility specifically to pursue NC-IVF. Both had previously undergone stimulated cycle IVF but failed to have success and wished to avoid fertility drugs. They were unable to find any local clinics (Moscow and Albania respectively) that were willing to perform NC-IVF so they elected to travel here to the Washington DC area. Although language was a bit of a challenge at times both of these lovely patients… Continue

From High Responder to Low Responder: Natural Cycle IVF Success

Infertility can certainly be a wild ride. Here is an extreme example of how patients can ride that roller coaster of emotions...

DK is a 38 year old who came to see me in September 2008. She and her husband had undergone fertility treatment 3 years earlier at another center and conceived with CC/FSH/IUI but had a quintuplet pregnancy that ultimately ended up as twins. They were very worried about having another multiple pregnancy and wished to discuss options.

However, as… Continue

What Happens if My Tubes Are Removed?

As fertility doctors, Dr. D and I are often in the position of recommending that a woman consider having her fallopian tubes removed. Although this seems a bit unusual it is important to understand what role the tubes play in reproduction and in having menstrual cycles. First of all, the only job performed by the tubes is that of incubator for the eggs and sperm. Pregnancy starts in the tube assuming that the tube captures the egg once it is released from the ovary and also assuming that the… Continue

Hello Dr Gordon.  I just want to emphasize how much I believe in Dominion despite of saying that it feels like the Dr's and staff are always too busy.  I have to say that you're right.... you can't read our minds. I'm sometimes guilty of thinking that people should know how others feel. I guess going through IVF just makes me more sensitive than usual.   I WOULD STILL REFER FRIENDS TO DOMINION..IT'S A GREAT PRACTICE....JUST ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE!!!

Totally agree with you about the progesterone, I've taken the supps and had such bad PMS like symptoms that I knew it didn't work long before the blood test.

Progesterone side effects during 2ww

I'm currently 11dp7dt after a frozen blastocyst transfer, and I've been pretty shocked by the side effects of the progesterone & estrace.  The cramping, bloating, breast soreness, and emotional nosedive are overwhelming.  What concerns me most is the cramping.   A number of times it was bad enough to wake me from a sound sleep.  I was told that was ok and normal as long as there is no bleeding.  I am doing the progesterone suppositories.  I can't help but wonder how or why an embryo would…See More
