Tackling yardwork...and infertility
As new homeowners, we’re realizing all of the new responsibilities we now have. Over the summer I tried my hand at the glorious task of weeding. Now, I have to tell you that we bought our house from two veteran gardeners who spent countless hours perfecting the yard. We shudder to think of how they would react if they knew their legacy was entrusted to such novice city-slickers. Nonetheless, never one to shy from trying new things, I grabbed a hefty set of gloves and a few garbage bags and got to work. Several days later and much in need of a good massage, I had gained a new respect for the tenacity of the unwanted weed, not to mention our former homeowners. And as someone who’s spent way too much time in medicine instead of yard maintenance, I couldn’t help but think that if we could just harness the implantation potential of these weeds, we’d solve so many cases of infertility! And, why is that some plants grow so easily, almost ignored, while others require so much attention and effort?
I think this is always one of the more frustrating aspects of dealing with infertility. All of your friends are getting pregnant, or at least it seems that way, and it didn’t take them any time at all. Maybe you spent a good portion of your own life avoiding pregnancy, terrified by the stories your mom told you about how easy it is to get pregnant. And now it’s starting to feel stressful and just downright unfair. Not all pregnancies grow like weeds, and a lot of them do require more nurturing, and that’s ok. But that’s when it’s so important to be sure you are getting the right help and the right information. And if you’re looking for an excuse to decline that next baby shower, I’ve got an extra set of gardening gloves with your name on it.

Last week we had a SART/CDC site inspection. All IVF clinics in the country report to the CDC as part of the Wyden Law passed back in the 1990s. Although a few clinics choose not to report we have always been members of SART and reported to the CDC. During the inspection over 50 charts are chosen at random and carefully inspected to make sure that we are honest and accurate in reporting our results. We passed with flying colors!
